September 8, 2021 -- QUILT SHOW HEALTH PRECAUTIONS

Notice:  Health Precautions for the Raintree Quilters Guild Quilt Show on September 17-18 at the Old National Events Plaza, 715 Locust St., Evansville

The Old National Events Plaza is a Vanderburgh County facility, and as such, has a "Masks Required" mandate upon entry to the facility.  This is currently in place at all County facilities.  Disposable masks are available for those who need them.

There are no social distancing requirements at this time.  When comparing our peak expected occupancy for this year's Show to the required social distancing requirements in effect in 2020, be advised that peak number is less than 1/2 of the limit, and less than 1/4 of the current full occupancy limit.  The size of the Exhibit Hall, along with the high ceilings and air handling capabilities are advantageous.  A 10' buffer space has been placed between vendors.  The quilt layout allows for easy movement and improved spacing for visitors while viewing the quilts.

Hand sanitizer stands are strategically placed in the Exhibit Hall/Entry area.

Enjoy the Show, and feel confident that we have done our best to ensure your safety.

5/2/2019 Heather Givans Succulent Garden Class

Picture
Heather Givans, Traveling Teacher presented a classs on 5/12/19.  Heather's Succulent Garden quilt pattern is the perfect one to use to feature interesting fabrics or larger prints or enjoy ranges of colors.  Heather is a delight.  She started the class by describing how to combine and juxtapose different colors and graphic styles to get interesting combinations and pleasing results.

When I dropped in to photograph the class projects I found a bunch of happy quilters in the middle of enjoying the creativity of their art.  I'm sorry to see that some of the pics below are cut off, but if you click on the pic the whole photo will be enlarged.

Everyone was engrossed and making great progress.  I hope we'll see lots of these at Show and Tell and at the Quilt Show!

Here's a picture of a few blocks sewn together. Blocks will be sold at SWIRCA events and at the 2019 Quilt Show.

11/29/2018 Indiana Bicentennial Quilt Hung at USI Rice Library

The Indiana Bicentennial Quilt has been hung in the Rice Library on the campus of USI.   USI held a brief presentation today for the hanging of the quilt.  Several members of Raintree Quilters Guild and several Library personnel attended.

Olivia TenBarge described the elements of the quilt.  The quilt main colors are blue and gold, the colors of Indiana's state flag.  It has  19 starts because Indiana is the 19th state in the U.S.A.(8 in the border on each side, 2 on the bottom and the 19th start is the central star in the quilt.)   The quilt center is made of log cabin blocks and there is an applique'd log cabin for our frontier heritage.  In the middle of each log cabin is a red square piece.  This is a traditional component of log cabin blocks and is said to represent the hearth of the home and therefore the warmth and heart.   Applique'd in black on the quilt is the map of the state in the center, a log cabin above the state map, an Indy race car to the right of the map and the state bird, the cardinal, to the right.

In celebreation of Indiana's 200th anniversary, the Evansville Public Library system held a contest to establish the design of the quilt  in early 2016.  Olivia TenBarge, a Raintree member won.   Then sewing sessions were set up at seversl of the branch libraries.  Raintree quilters taught and assisted quilt makers, young and old, new and experienced in the making of the quilt's log cabin blocks.  Raintree members joined the completed blocks together and added the borders.  Linda Bohlen, also a Raintree member, machine quilted it.  After it was bound it was displayed at Evansville Central Library for several months and again at Raintree's 2017 Quilt Show.

After the Quilt Show Olivia began to search for a permanent home for the quilt.   University of Indiana Southern agreed to take ownership of the quilt and display it while conserving it for the longer run.  Raintree Quilters Guild is thrilled and honored that USI has taken such an interest in keeping and displaying  this community project.

A permanent label will be added to the wall at Rice Library to describe them history and meaning of the quilt.

8/1-2/18 Beth Schnellenberger Extreme Embroidery!

Beth Schnellenberger of Jasper, IN, presented a trunk show of her quilt works at Raintree's meeting on 8/1.   Her audience was enthralled and thoroughly enjoyed the program.  Then Thursday morning, 8/2 she taught her Extreme Embroidery Class to 10 Raintree members.  I visited the class and found they were out for late lunch.  So I photographed some works in progress:
Here are some examples of Beth's own completed works of extreme embroidery.
Then I stayed around to wait till I could get some good action photos.  Well, there are no hi-speed chases or home run hits or dramatic tackles in embroidery class.  But there was a bunch of avid stitchers:
Here's Beth's quilt entitled "Scorched Earth".  She showed it Wednesday night, 8/1, among her trunk show quilts.  Thanks to Kathy Maxwell for the photo.

Recent Anne Zick Traveling Teacher Classes:  English Paper Piecing

In English Paper piecing you use a simple template made of paper or flexy plastic and temporarily fasten your fabric to it.  Then you assemble the pieces with the templates still behind.  Eventually you remove the templates from the back. Typically you use a bunch of the same shape and size pieces to make a quilt.  Ann Zick is an expert teacher on English Paper Piecing.  Class participants learned about the planning and techniques involved in creating an English Paper Pieced quilt.  This technique is easy to take along anywhere for handwork and is said to be relaxing.  The class was clearly having a great time and getting very nice resuilts when I went to take these photos.

Quilt For The Cure Block Challenge  -- 10/5/16

Raintree Quilters Guild has conducted a quilt block challenge to benefit Susan G. Komen Tri-State Evansville Affiliate selected her favorite for a Director's Choice Award.  The Viewer's Choice and Director's Choice winners received ribbons and gift certificates from area quilt shops.  In addition, the person who submitted the most blocks (Karen Hampton, 22 blocks) received chocolates, and other participants were selected by random drawing to receive chocolates. . . .

Old Fashioned Bed Turning -- 9/18/16

Sharon Metzger Conducts Old Fashioned Bed Turning -- 9/18/16

Raintree's Sunday,  9/18/16 Old Fashioned Bed Turning was a delight and an eye-opener.  Tea and sweets warmed us up to the event while volunteers were arranging and readying the quilts brought by audience members for the bed turning.
We were asked to bring quilts made before 1960.   Some brought quilts that they inherited from family members, others brought quilts they had bought and believed to be antiques.

American Quilt Society (AQS) Certified Quilt Appraiser Sharon Metzger led the event and looked over each quilt to help identify the its age and give us an evaluation of the condition and rarity of the quilt. . . .

Evansville Public Library Centennial Quilt Project

To celebrate Indiana’s Bicentennial the Evansville Public Library System is sponsoring two Community Quilts.  One will be made by adults, the other for children.
Adult Quilt
The design submitted by Olivia Tenbarge was selected for the adult quilt.  Her plan is to use Judit Hajdu’s Log Cabin Carpenter’s Star design with some appliqué added around the edge.  The appliqué’ may be nixed as difficult for the participants to do.  See below for photos from the first session.
Five workshops are scheduled at Vanderburgh libraries to assemble the quilt.  Area quilters, sewists, and novices are all invited to participate to complete this quilt at these workshops.  See the Events/Calendar page for dates and times.
Children’s Quilt
Stacy Jensen designed the kids quilt.  It will be a checkerboard design with one type of check consisting of a 4-patch of charm squares and the other will be kids drawings using fabric markers on a 9” square.   The blocks will be colored and hand-stitched together by kids.  See the Events/Calendar page for dates and times.
