Youth Quilts Brighten 16th Harvest of Quilts

At the 16th Harvest of Quilts, Raintree's quilt show, twenty youths exhibited twenty-nine quilt projects.  We held drawings for three sewing machines at 3:30 Saturday afternoon and presented them to the participating youths.  In addition all the participants got "goody bags" of sewing notions.  The youth participants included:  Kinley Hasenour, Eleanor Henry, Savannah Scheffler, Mia Erdman, Hazel Manuel, Joanna Wilson, Paisley Hasenour, Amelia Schipp, Milli Turner, Isabelle Schipp, Oliver Schipp, Brylee Davis, Brooklyn Davis, Krissy Devine, Allie Devine, Lauren Bickers, Isabelle Edmison, Bailey Graves, Tulsi Dwiel and Olivia Galvin.  Their quilts showed creativity, happy colors, and emerging and advanced skills.  Three cheers for young quilters!!!

Over 250 Quilts to be Exhibited, Including 28 Youth Quilts

We have more quilts than any time in recent history at this year's quilt show.  It should be a beautiful, colorful, varied, spectacular show.  The youth part of the show is going to be a delightful addition with the participation of nearly 28 young quilters.  (A few are bringing us 2 quilts to show.)  Excitement is high among our member who are busily finishing up final details of their quilts.

Karen K. Stone Improvisational Quilting Class

Seventeen Raintree members completed Karen Stone's Improvisational 3-day quilting class yesterday, 11/7-9/24.   We learned several techniques for dealing with gentle and curvy curves including an applique' method.
"Karen Stone was an excellent teacher of methods and techniques.  We learned about several ways to prepare and then machine-sew applique pieces to a background.  We also learned ways to machine sew awkward pieces like hexies, apple cores and clamshells that are otherwise best pieced by hand.  I couldn't wait to start using some of the techniques I learned, so during the week after the class I let my house go to the dogs while I started a project I couldn't wait to get into.  If you ever get a chance to take this class from Karen be sure to do so. " Cindy Willis

Port Pillow Project

Raintree has been asked to sew port pillows for chemo-therapy patients and others who need IV ports.  They use them to cushion the port area from car seatbelts.  Members wishing to make some port pillows (they are very quick and easy to make) can see the instructions here.

Dr. Tony Jean Dickerson presents at July 3, 2024 Guild Meeting

Our July speaker was Dr. Tony Jean Dickers (on on the right in the photo).  She is  a lead faculty member at Martin University in Indianapolis, a speaker for Indiana humanities and a nationally recognized quilter.  Her  presentation was titled Black Quilters: Hard Topics, Soft Blows.  Quilts have been used as an important vehicle to tell the stories of the struggles of the African American community.  She presented quilts from her collection that told stories from her experience and from her personal and cultural heritage.  The quilts were often inspired by her personal connection to the stories told in Tiya Miles book, All That She Carried.  Dr. Dickerson highly recommended this book.
